Street Reviews Logrono Harvest Festival Part 4/8 “Alicia Rojas”

It was late afternoon when I met up with my host Sandy. Today we would take a break from the festivities in Logrono and head west toward Zaragoza on the N-232 to a small town called Ausejo, the home of Alicia Rojas Bodega.  There I had the once in a lifetime opportunity to hang out with an absolute legend in the Rioja wine business, Alicia Rojas. Providing a little TLC for her "babies". Alicia was formerly an attorney, but 30 years ago she took over her fathers winery and became Rioja's first certified female wine maker.  Alicia and her Bodega have collected many accolades over the years including "Entrepreneur of the Year" and "Best in Wine Tourism". She is also credited as being the first to produce organic wines in Rioja. Today Alicia produces over 8 different lines of wine that are exported all over the world, including all of the wines for La Flecha Amarilla. Rioja (wine country). Alicia took me on a personal tour and taught me more about harvesting wine than I have ever learned on any winery visit. After my tour I was treated to a 5 course meal of traditional Rioja dishes cooked by Alicia herself, using mostly ingredients that came from her over 800 hectares of property. Lunch with a legend! The meal was great and wines were paired perfectly.  My favorite came from the Alicia Rojas Private Collection which is limited to just 3000 bottles a year. After lunch I had an interview planned, but we had lost our car keys while touring the winery. This unfortunately cut our evening a little short and we had to hitch a ride back to Logrono with Alicia. I was completely wore out by the time we got back, so I went straight back to my hotel and crashed!
