Recently, Celebrity Wine Review was invited to spend a day at the St Joannes winery in the Penedez region of Catalonia, Spain. While setting up for the first review we noticed that atop a hill, next to the bodega, was a beautiful tower. It was an obvious location to setup the first review, and come to find out it was a historic 11th century Church with an amazing view from the bell tower. It was a great way to kick off the day, the view was spectacular and the wine was pleasant as well. The Xarel.lo (Pronounced Cha-rel-low)is a native grape to the region and together with Macabeu and Parellada is used to make Spanish Cava (sparkling wine). The grape is not commonly used in many other places, so it was a refreshing opportunity to try a wine from a relatively unknown grape variety all on its own.
