Yesterday was my first time ever at Pizzeria Delfina. Unthinkable that this San Francisco Italian legend by which all other pizzerias in the Bay Area are measured has evaded me all this time. Opened in 2005 in an attempt to re-create the spirit of Naples, the place seems to be packed every minute it's open.

In one word, simply AWESOME!
Tiny space, adjacent to the Restaurant Delfina proper (open since 1998), 4 chefs running like hamsters, churning out perfect pizzas, and other delicious accoutrements non-stop all day long. Sitting at the counter in front of the little space they call kitchen, I felt jealous of the business these guys have, and yet I don't think I would want to work like that - these guys are athletes, man!

Their Salciccia (sausage) pizza was simply the best sausage pizza I'd ever had. Housemade fennel sausage, tomato, bell peppers, onions, mozzarella - perfect crispy thin crust, bright, fresh tomato sauce, super fresh melt-in-your-mouth clumps of sausage - I am going back! The special of the day - the mushroom pizza with cream sauce ("Hen of the Woods" mushrooms, fontina, panna, nepitella) was more expensive and not nearly as good (missing the "zing and zang" of the Salciccia).

Wine selection was decent and decidedly Southern Italy. About 10 red wines by the glass (plus whites and sparkling). I ordered an Aglianico, the leading red wine grape from Campania (for /glass) - it was nothing to write home about, a bit muddy and peppery, but with decent acidity which is hallmark of Italian wines, but nonetheless it went perfectly with the pizza. I think Sangiovese is a quintessential pizza wine, and a simple Chianti or two on the menu would have worked well. However, the wine selection is Southern Italian (heavily from Campania, where Naples is located), so thus they intentionally avoid Sangiovese / Tuscan based wines (or Umbrian, for that matter), for Neapolitan authenticity. And at any rate, Tuscany, Umbria, and Piedmonte would not be edgy enough for the hip-ish Mission neighborhood.

Spicy cauliflower with garlic, capers, breadcrumbs & Calabrian chilies, baked, and then pan-fried in butter - soft, crunchy, a little salty, with a bite from red pepper spice was great with a glass of peppery Aglianico.

A block away, I found the most excellent ice-cream place called Bi-Rite Creamery - with amazingly delectable and mind-bogglingly complex Salted Caramel ice-cream! And on the other end of the block - Tartine Bakery & Cafe, with mouth-watering cakes and baked goods. Needless to say, all 3 joints - Delfina, Bi-Rite, and Tartine have people lined up out the door. Good for them!

Celebrity Wine Review TV recently attended the 2010 World Wine Symposium at the world famous Villa D'Este on the banks of Lake Como, Italy. During the conference, we came to find out that Hollywood actor George Clooney's famous Lake Como villa is just up the street from where we were filming. Since Celebrity Wine Review TV's mission is to scour the world to interview celebrities about their passion for wine, the opportunity was too good to pass up. We decided to take a rare magnum bottle of Il Caberlot, a Tuscan wine made of the Caberlot grape, which can only be found on the 2 hectares of land used by that estate and no where else in the world. We knew it was a long shot, but for the sake of our audience who trust us get them an exclusive and fresh perspective on wine, we had to give it a try. Enjoy the video!

Day 1 at the World Wine Symposium I’m already in love. Admittedly, I have only just put my foot through the door, but already there is a warm welcome from the staff at Villa D’Este, undoubtedly one of the most awe inspiring hotels I have ever visited.

It’s not just the epic grandeur and lakeside position of the hotel but also the level of service that makes it so special. I’m not used to my luggage disappearing so fast only to reappear in the room. At the last place I stayed in, an airport hotel in London, I received a frosty welcome worthy of a Siberian massage parlour. The receptionist looked so annoyed that I’d turned up with a reservation! I have been invited to the World Wine Symposium, a now annual event that was started last year in a bid to bring producers, journalists and importers together to discuss the future of the wine industry. It’s my first time working with the producer of Celebrity Wine Review TV, so we will be on the prowl looking for some good inside stories and famous names in the wine world to interview. François Mauss, founder of the Grand Jury Européen and the Symposium opens the conference with a bang. “We must remember that wine is much more than just alcohol. That is just one component of a complex and ancient culture. Today, governments are very keen to crack down on excessive drinking and wine consumption, unfortunately, is in danger of becoming demonised”, he stresses You have to admire Mauss, who started the Grand Jury Européen in an effort to provide an alternative to the Parker score monopoly, for his conviction and determination to protect his beloved industry. Winemakers are generally intense, passionate people who love their subject. But, they know how to have fun too, which keeps the conference interesting! I meet up with the producer of Celebrity Wine Review TV at lunch time and after the first of many stunning meals, we take a boat trip out towards George Clooney’s house in Lake Como. It’s a clear, but cold October day, which only adds to the profound beauty of Lake Como. We had two choices of boat driver. The experienced sailor or the beautiful Antonella, head of marketing for Villa D’Este. We choose the latter. My pidgin Italian with a strong English accent brings a smile to her face, as Antonella explains the history of the hotel. We decide not to risk just turning up at George's without an invitation, as he may have guard dogs. I have already had one encounter with a vicious Yorkshire terrier this year. Back at the hotel, most of the guests have arrived by now, a mixture of winemakers, wine lovers and anyone who has a stake in this valuable industry. As Francois says, “the Wine Industry is vital for the European economy”. Plus it gives pleasure to millions. The producer and I miss the Bordeaux First Growth and Romanée-Conti tastings, but a generous doctor from Malaysia shares his glass of 1990 La Tâche with me. It is my first sip of this infamous wine and I am taken aback. Not by the power but by the intoxicating nose and finesse of the wine, it has reserves of flavour beyond imagination. Well worth the hype. Ok, back to work. I chat with the producer and we line up some cool and interesting people to interview tomorrow. Earlier today, I met a lovely German couple who have the rarest grape variety on earth in their estate in Tuscany, Caberlot. There are only 2 hectares of this variety in the world, a genetic cross between Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Bettina, the winery owner, explains that the varietal was first identified in the early 1960´s in an old abandoned vineyard near Padua. Her husband, Woolf Rogosky, acquired and named the varietal `Caberlot´, and set out to produce a great wine with a truly unique character. Definitely be interviewing them tomorrow. Time for dinner and the Wines of Austria presentation. Willie Klinger, a jolly Austrian, introduces each wine with our courses. The food, as expected, was excellent. The Sauvignon Blanc proved a hit with the producer of the show. I fall asleep wondering what day two will bring. [gallery link="file" columns="2"]

North Berkeley wine is a full-service importer, retailer and wholesaler that specializes in fine wines from France, Italy and Chile. At their portfolio tasting last week, I checked out a few Burgundies and Italian goodies from the Fall lineup (sounds like a fashion show, doesn't it?!), out of 100 or so different wines. Not many shook my world, but here are a few that are worth mentioning IMHO. Two red Burgundies were head and shoulders above all French wines at the tasting: 1. Wine of the Tasting - Frederic Magnien 2007 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru. While in general I find most 2007 red Burgundies to be lacking power and plushness, even struggling at the Grand Cru level, this one was balanced, elegant, and quite good and charming, though not a powerhouse either, but one of the better red wines from Burgundy in 2007. Price? Don't ask! (0/btl). 2. Gerard Raphet 2008 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Les Combttes" - good intensity, creaminess and spice. 0/btl. A couple of Italians. 1. Castello della Paneretta - Monstanto 2000 Terrine IGT - a 3L grand bottle from Tuscany, 50% Sangiovese, 50% Canaiolo - very nice, full bodied wine, entering its maturity, just plain tasty stuff. I kept going for more tastes. Awesome with herb crusted goat cheese. More rustic than elegant, I felt like grabbing the 3L by the neck and throwing a big Italian party. Kicker - over 0/btl... that could dampen the mood... 2. Ronchi 2006 Barbaresco "Ronchi" (to be released winter 2011). Very tasty. Not super elegant or complex, but not super expensive either (should sell for under /btl). I am starting to like 2006 Barolos and Barbarescos, as they mellow out and show their true colors. In a year or two, 2006's should be as good as 2005's, but with more aging potential. The Frederic Magnien's 2007 Clos de Vougeot was great with the luscious Brillat-Savarin (on the right-hand side in the photo above) cow-based triple-cream brie cheese from Normandy, France and another, thicker, soft and more pungent French cheese whose name I didn't get (that's the one that looks like a bowl of cheese). Here is a bit of wine-and-cheese pairing wisdom for ya: (as a generalization) I have observed that Burgundies go well with cow-based French cheeses, and Italian wines go well with sheep or goat based Italian and Spanish cheeses. Makes sense, doesn't it? - as Italian wines tend to have a zingy, even slightly salty quality to them - just try a young Pecorino cheese with Chianti, or Boschetto al Tartufo (truffle cheese) with Barbaresco - heavenly! Yesterday was my first time ever at Pizzeria Delfina. Unthinkable that this San Francisco Italian legend by which all other pizzerias in the Bay Area are measured has evaded me all this time. Opened in 2005 in an attempt to re-create the spirit of Naples, the place seems to be packed every minute it's open.

In one word, simply AWESOME!
Tiny space, adjacent to the Restaurant Delfina proper (open since 1998), 4 chefs running like hamsters, churning out perfect pizzas, and other delicious accoutrements non-stop all day long. Sitting at the counter in front of the little space they call kitchen, I felt jealous of the business these guys have, and yet I don't think I would want to work like that - these guys are athletes, man!

Their Salciccia (sausage) pizza was simply the best sausage pizza I'd ever had. Housemade fennel sausage, tomato, bell peppers, onions, mozzarella - perfect crispy thin crust, bright, fresh tomato sauce, super fresh melt-in-your-mouth clumps of sausage - I am going back! The special of the day - the mushroom pizza with cream sauce ("Hen of the Woods" mushrooms, fontina, panna, nepitella) was more expensive and not nearly as good (missing the "zing and zang" of the Salciccia).

Wine selection was decent and decidedly Southern Italy. About 10 red wines by the glass (plus whites and sparkling). I ordered an Aglianico, the leading red wine grape from Campania (for $11/glass) - it was nothing to write home about, a bit muddy and peppery, but with decent acidity which is hallmark of Italian wines, but nonetheless it went perfectly with the pizza. I think Sangiovese is a quintessential pizza wine, and a simple Chianti or two on the menu would have worked well. However, the wine selection is Southern Italian (heavily from Campania, where Naples is located), so thus they intentionally avoid Sangiovese / Tuscan based wines (or Umbrian, for that matter), for Neapolitan authenticity. And at any rate, Tuscany, Umbria, and Piedmonte would not be edgy enough for the hip-ish Mission neighborhood.

Spicy cauliflower with garlic, capers, breadcrumbs & Calabrian chilies, baked, and then pan-fried in butter - soft, crunchy, a little salty, with a bite from red pepper spice was great with a glass of peppery Aglianico.

A block away, I found the most excellent ice-cream place called Bi-Rite Creamery - with amazingly delectable and mind-bogglingly complex Salted Caramel ice-cream! And on the other end of the block - Tartine Bakery & Cafe, with mouth-watering cakes and baked goods. Needless to say, all 3 joints - Delfina, Bi-Rite, and Tartine have people lined up out the door. Good for them!

North Berkeley wine is a full-service importer, retailer and wholesaler that specializes in fine wines from France, Italy and Chile. At their portfolio tasting last week, I checked out a few Burgundies and Italian goodies from the Fall lineup (sounds like a fashion show, doesn't it?!), out of 100 or so different wines. Not many shook my world, but here are a few that are worth mentioning IMHO. Two red Burgundies were head and shoulders above all French wines at the tasting: 1. Wine of the Tasting - Frederic Magnien 2007 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru. While in general I find most 2007 red Burgundies to be lacking power and plushness, even struggling at the Grand Cru level, this one was balanced, elegant, and quite good and charming, though not a powerhouse either, but one of the better red wines from Burgundy in 2007. Price? Don't ask! ($180/btl). 2. Gerard Raphet 2008 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Les Combttes" - good intensity, creaminess and spice. $110/btl. A couple of Italians. 1. Castello della Paneretta - Monstanto 2000 Terrine IGT - a 3L grand bottle from Tuscany, 50% Sangiovese, 50% Canaiolo - very nice, full bodied wine, entering its maturity, just plain tasty stuff. I kept going for more tastes. Awesome with herb crusted goat cheese. More rustic than elegant, I felt like grabbing the 3L by the neck and throwing a big Italian party. Kicker - over $250/btl... that could dampen the mood... 2. Ronchi 2006 Barbaresco "Ronchi" (to be released winter 2011). Very tasty. Not super elegant or complex, but not super expensive either (should sell for under $40/btl). I am starting to like 2006 Barolos and Barbarescos, as they mellow out and show their true colors. In a year or two, 2006's should be as good as 2005's, but with more aging potential. The Frederic Magnien's 2007 Clos de Vougeot was great with the luscious Brillat-Savarin (on the right-hand side in the photo above) cow-based triple-cream brie cheese from Normandy, France and another, thicker, soft and more pungent French cheese whose name I didn't get (that's the one that looks like a bowl of cheese). Here is a bit of wine-and-cheese pairing wisdom for ya: (as a generalization) I have observed that Burgundies go well with cow-based French cheeses, and Italian wines go well with sheep or goat based Italian and Spanish cheeses. Makes sense, doesn't it? - as Italian wines tend to have a zingy, even slightly salty quality to them - just try a young Pecorino cheese with Chianti, or Boschetto al Tartufo (truffle cheese) with Barbaresco - heavenly! While covering the 2nd Annual International Wine Tourism conference in Spain, Host Desiree took some time to hold our first Battle of the Wines between a Spanish 2007 Garnacha Blanca and an Italian Gavi from La Scolca in the southern part of the Piedmont region. The prize? Dinner with Desiree!
