Wine DJ Mike Brown visits the beautiful Palomar de la Brena, Spain

Whenever I hear someone mention the beach in Spain images start to dance through my head of beautifully bronzed bodies, palm trees and the warm blue Mediterranean Sea. Having already scoped out the famous beaches of Barcelona, Sitges, Malaga and Torremolinos, I decided it was time to move my never ending quest for beautiful places and great wine to the South Atlantic coast (the Costa de la Luz). I soon found myself in the small fishing village of Barbate. The long, sandy beach along side the village was quiet and inviting and had plenty of small simple cafes and bars to check out. I spent my time on the less populated part just past the port area for its fascinating views of 100 plus meter cliffs off to your right.

While soaking up some rays and chatting with locals I was told there was a n even more beautiful "hippy" beach just a few kilometers down the street. Rumor had it there was a small hotel and restaurant with a great wine list that I could find on the way too... I love Spain! Making a mental note to check them out later I packed my bag and left, the long day in the sun was exhausting!

I woke up the next morning with plans to spend the day relaxing at Canos de Meca. The small cliffs and secluded coves found here give this popular clothing optional beach an intimate vibe. Much to my dismay the powerful south easterly winds known as the levante were blowing which made my beach visit out of the question. While strolling through the local market that afternoon I met certified nutritionist Anne Bernabeau who invited me to join her at Palomar de la Brena, the hotel I had heard about the day before, to talk a little bit about wine. Always the eager student I gladly accepted her offer and showed up for a cup and conversation.

The Palomar de la Brena is nestled in a lush pine forest that is designated as a national park. The restaurant and bar are very popular, and they have an excellent wine list. If my count was correct there are 20 reds, whites and cavas to chose from. The relaxed atmosphere here was a welcome haven from the strong levante. As I sipped a smooth Rioja on the warm sunny patio I was truly amazed to learn about all the real health benefits found in the crimson potion I enjoy so much. Finding out red wine is better for you than white put a smile on my face too!

The next time you pour a glass of your favorite wine, you can take comfort in the fact that you are doing something positive for your health. I think everyone at Celebrity Wine Review would agree with Anne when she said the best way to drink wine was to "enjoy it with good food and good friends". Those are doctors orders I certainly don't mind following.

Palomar de la Brena is also certified by the Guiness Book of world records as being the home of the worlds largest dove cove. For more info go to www.palomardelabrena.com.
